Design Tip

Don’t Overlook This–They Matter More Than You Think

When selecting grout and adhesive for your pool tile or decking, choose products specifically rated for wet, high-traffic, and freeze-thaw conditions—especially in climates like North Texas. For grout, lighter shades can brighten the look of your tile but may show dirt more easily, while darker tones offer contrast and lower maintenance. Epoxy grout, though pricier, is highly durable and stain-resistant—ideal for longevity. As for adhesive, make sure it's a modified thin-set mortar designed for submerged use to ensure tiles stay put, season after season.

  • Epoxy grout is often the best choice for pools because it’s water-resistant, highly durable, and resistant to chemicals, stains, and cracking. For budget-friendly options, cement-based grout with added sealant can also work but may need more maintenance.

  • Yes! Grout color affects the overall look of your tile. Lighter colors create a clean, seamless appearance, while darker grout adds contrast and may hide dirt better. Choose a color that complements your tile and pool design.

  • High-quality grout, especially epoxy, can last 10–15 years or more with proper maintenance. Cement-based grouts may require re-grouting or sealing sooner depending on use and exposure.

  • Epoxy grout does not require sealing, but cement-based grout should be sealed regularly (every 1–2 years) to protect against moisture, staining, and algae growth.

  • It’s not recommended. Stick with one type per application for consistent performance. Mixing materials can cause weak spots or adhesion failures.

  • Not all. Pool environments expose materials to chlorine, saltwater, and pool chemicals, so be sure to use products specifically labeled chemical- or saltwater-resistant for long-term durability.

  • Efflorescence (a white, chalky residue) can be minimized by using low-alkali cement-based grout, ensuring proper curing, and controlling water chemistry. Epoxy grout typically does not have this issue.
